‘My Sport Won’t Pay the Bills Forever’: High-Performance Athletes’ Need for Financial Literacy and Self-Management

This paper investigates high-performance athletes’ development of their financial literacy and self-management skills the related organisational support available to them during athletic careers. The data were collected from 20 retired athletes (10 male 10 female) representing six different countries (Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, UK). Thematic analysis was applied processing five themes emerged: (1) Funding battles: challenges misjudgements; (2) Coping Strategies; (3) Support sponsors, parents, sport organisations; (4) Development Financial Literacy; (5) Life After Sport. indicates that experienced due a lack support, reduced or terminated funding, limited opportunities access sponsorship. Typically, developed by ‘self-help’ ‘trial error’. findings contribute both literature practice providing empirical evidence on coping strategies adopted in order overcome methods used develop skills. These inform organisations governing bodies schemes for as well deepen our knowledge career transitions focusing aspect.
